Housed in what’s arguably one of the most striking shop buildings in Amsterdam, the windows of the Hermès boutique are a sight to behold, and especially, when they showcase the coveted merchandise embedded in yet another evocatice window installation. Recently revealed on the premises is A Race in the Garden, the window installation of Dutch practice and frequent collaborator Studio Mieke Meijer. Oozing colourful Spring splendour, the installation pays homage to Hermès very first boutique at rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré 24 in Paris, and references the visionary ambitions of Émile Hermès, one of the house’s driving forces. This location has played a significant part in the company’s rise one of the planet’s leading luxury brands, embodying both its origins and unbridled artistic spirit, and it’s specifically its blooming roof garden which has captured the designers’ imagination, occupying the store’s all three windows with compelling recreations. Interestingly, the studio’s interpretation, which is imbued with the apparent oxymoron ‘absence of presence’ stems from Karakuri, a 17th-century Japanese mechanical system used for dolls. A curated selection of Hermès items is showcased in the installations, including a Bolide Skate bag tranformed in a watering can and a silk Course Cinétique carré scarf cavorting like a trophy horse (on through April). © superfuture.com
