We’ve already seen Oslo‘s fast-emerging Sentrum or downtown district becoming a notable shopping destination in its own right, and to such an extent, it’s now rivalling the more established retail arenas of neighbouring capitals Copenhagen and Stockholm. Norwegian jewellery brand Tom Wood has now pitched in, in this upward trend with brand new flagship store on Øvre Slottsgate, which coincides with the brand’s tenth anniversary. Tom Wood was founded by Mona Jensen, a marketing business owner-turned-designer, and started out with a concise collection inspired by historic signet rings. Jensen was later joined by husband Morten Isachsen, and today, the brand has a full-time staff of 40, in addition to a growing number of leading stockists across the planet.

Seven years after first opening up shop in the Norwegian capital, Tom Wood has inaugurated a new flagship store. Occupying a 160 sqm. (1,722 sq.ft.) ground floor unit on the premises of a landmark structure built in 1896 by Norwegian architect Ivar Cock, the retail space features an interior design by Stockholm-based design practice Specific Generic. Clean and understated, very much like the brand’s aesthetics, the interior design firmly embeds environmental values. As such, recyclable materials, including aluminium and steel have been prioritised which can easily be remade or repurposed in the future. Upon entering the flagship store, shoppers come across a row of six cabinets crafted from steel, and each is capped with two glass display cases brimming with jewellery.

It’s flanked on one side by a zigzagging screen of large mirrors lining the wall, while at the end, a striking floor-to-ceiling shelving unit made up of little drawers can be found. And speaking of the ceiling, it’s exposed, whitewashed, and sees rows of linear lights dangling from it which optically enlarge the space. The opposite side sees a so-called flexible wall, comprising moveable cabinets, mirrors and large screens which allow a versatile configuration at all times. A sizeable hand-carved wooden bench of furniture artist Niklas Runesson not only adds a warm note to the austere setting, but also aims to signal the brand’s respect for nature and how it serves as a source of inspiration. The new Tom Wood flagship store carries the brand’s full range of women’s and men’s collections.
