Finnish jewellery brand Kalevala was founded in 1935, and takes its name from an eponymous 19th-century compilation of epic poetry which is widely regarded as a cultural landmark of Finland, and unsurprisingly, its designs are rooted in values of design, nature, craftsmanship, and heritage. A little while ago, Kalevala‘s new flagship store opened its doors in downtown Helsinki. The retail space occupies a 102 sqm. (1,098 sq.ft.) ground floor unit of a low-rise structure, and features an interior design by Finnish interior architecture and design practice Yatofu Creatives. Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow in floods of natural light, and also offer passers by ample peeks of a gallery-like interior anchored by a configuration of open cabinets meticulously crafted from dark timber and shiny metal.

Mind you, a unique system has been developed which allows a secured display of the jewellery without the need for traditional glass enclosures, allowing shoppers to touch and feel the merchandise while maintaining security. On one side, a counter crafted from dark timber and a recessed storage unit is paired with monolithic stools dipped in a contrasting sky blue shade, and which ties in with the sleek beams supporting the mezzanine floor. Up on the mezzanine floor, a private lounge can be found, furnished with a small oval table, identical stools as the ones downstairs, a display cabinet, a storage unit, and a totem-like art object. The lounge is used for private shopping or styling services for events and special occasions. The new Kalevala flagship store carries the full range of necklaces, earrings, and rings. © superfuture
