Late last year Maison Margiela revealed new design codes for its flagship stores and shop-in-shops, and the luxury brand’s new boutique at Réel shopping centre in Shanghai is one of the first to feature the aesthetic which has been created in collaboration with Amsterdam-based Studio Anne Holtrop. The Dutchman first collaborated with Maison Margiela on a gypsum-cast for its Artisanal Autumn/Winter 2018 show, and has now extrapolated the aesthetic to the fashion house’s retail spaces, including this 160 sqm. (1,722 sq.ft.) unit on the shopping centre’s ground floor. The defining structures of architecture, such as walls and columns, appear as detached objects, while artisanal furnishings reflect and alter ideas of familiarity.  Familiar shapes appear skew in form as they lean and fold around the demarcation of the space, drawing on ideas of dressing in haste that’s native to Maison Margiela’s vocabulary. Hand-cast in textile moulds, the surfaces of the plaster walls and columns retain sculpting dents, evoking the notion of hand-spun tactility. The plaster’s natural tonality also is a nod to the signature white of the Paris-based fashion house. In stark contrast, the walls and ceiling of the fitting rooms are dipped in a dark-green high gloss reminiscent of Japanese lacquer cabinets. The new Maison Margiela store carries the brand’s full range of women’s and men’s apparel, shoes, accessories, eyewear and fragrances.
