For any self-discerning fashion brand, either homegrown or overseas, a standalone retail space in Chengdu is an absolute must. The Chinese first-tier megalopolis is known for being home to a young and affluent demographic with a forward fashion sense that rivals youngsters in Shanghai and Beijing. Chinese contemporary fashion brand Randomevent tested the water last year with the high-profile Randomevent Market, a pop-up event which we’ve covered in a previous post, but as of late, it has opened the doors of its first standalone boutique here. Situated at COSMO Fortune Centre, a multi-storey shopping centre in the heart of the city, it occupies a two-level unit and also has a streetside entrance of its own. Contrary to its more polished neighbours, the Randomevent store façade has a more industrial and understated look, and partially made up of four weathered steel plates.

The Brutalism-inspired design codes extend inside where both the colours and a constellation of planes create visual harmony. The sizeable and voluminous ground floor allows in floods of daylight that adds an optical dimension to the interior design. The staircase to the upper floor is adorned by a colourful sculpture of artist and longtime brand collaborator Zhang Quan, inspired by the classic image of Karoro, a bunny character he invented for his whimsical Melting Sadness universe and eponymous streetwear brand. Mind you, a giant Karoro statue was erected at the entrance during the shop opening. The setting on the upper level is defined by timber display cabinets that line the walls. Adding up to an immersive shopping experience is a custom music audio system. The new Randomevent boutique carries the full range of men’s and women’s apparel, and unsurprisingly, select items by Melting Sadness.
