It’s a full circle moment for Hermès and MVRDV. Well, sort of. On P.C. Hooftstraat, Amsterdam‘s golden mile of luxury shopping, Paris-based fashion house Hermès occupies what’s arguably the most striking building, Crystal Houses. The semi-transparent structure, designed by the aforementioned acclaimed architecture practice from Rotterdam, has been home to Hermès‘ Dutch flagship store since 2019. Since its inauguration, the retail space has been a platform for top creative talents who showcase their vision through a rotation of themed window installation. And now, MVRDV has stepped into the Hermès limelight, inaugurating a window installation in the glass façade building they’ve designed. The installation is a new interpretation of Hermès’ 2025 theme Drawn to Craft, and is entitled Galloping through the Park. Making an intentional connection with the building, the visual landscape is engineered to scale up the windows to the entire façade.

Shoppers will merge into a tridimensional reading of complex yet dazzling wireframe computational drawings. At the centre of this journey, the building turns into a pure transparent dimension, where nearby Vondel Park is reimagined through this ‘extended window’: towering trees, bustling bikes, small pedestals, benches, birds twirling around a horse ready to gallop into an infinite landscape. The installation is crafted entirely from plant-based recyclable 3D printing materials. Conversing inside a contemplative landscape, both shoppers and passers-by will inhabit a world of whispering sounds: blooming nature, birds flying over the Mini Picnic Kelly in a Jaune de Naples hue, while an Hermès Cavale II jumping saddle frames the conversation. The installation is the quintessential MVRDV’s research-based design, where innovation and an unconventional vision has led the vast team of architects, landscape designers and urban planners, as an international renowned incubator for creative ideas (on through August). © superfuture
