The global Kissaten wave, which first emerged in 1950s Japan, has finally reached the shores of Milan, and its newly opened protagonist is called MOGO. Nestled in the Isola neighbourhood, just north of the city centre, the Hi-Fi bar and dining establishment occupies over 400 sqm. (4,306 sq.ft.) space on the ground floor of a sizeable industrial building which was once home to a well-known Italian brewery. The stylish interior design, created by local architecture and design practice Giorgia Longoni Studio, is anchored by a 360-degree central bar, paired with an expansive, luminous ceiling which adapts to any required mood. Seating a maximum of 99 guests, the setting is cozy and inviting thanks to a warm palette of hues and materials, such as carved wood, raw fabrics, metal, and washi paper. Adding even more character to the premises are a full-fledged designer DJ booth and a series of colourful, custom-made tapestries by Bologna-based artist Andrea Marco Corvino.
As for the venue’s name, MOGO is derived from Mmogo, a word from the Southern African Setswana language which means ‘together’ or ‘united’, and pretty much reflects the soul of the venue—a gathering place where people can share unique moments over good food, excellent cocktails, and last but not least, cool music. Additionally, MOGO also boasts a whopping 600 sqm. (6,458 sq.ft.) multifunctional and modular space where a variety of events can be held, a courtyard, and even a rooftop terrace. As a music venue, MOGO not only comes with a handcrafted Hi-Fi sound system, but also tunes curated by the peeps behind the Polifonic music and arts festival and music community BSR. As said, MOGO is a place where to indulge in drinks, including a wide selection of Japanese whiskies, Scotch, mezcal, gin, and sake, and also good food. Supervised by Yoji Tokuyoshi, a Japanese chef with considerable local fame, the menu lists dishes and bites inspired by Japanese culture, but prepared with a contemporary twist from various cuisines. © superfuture
