A designer who opens up shop isn’t something that happens very often, but Henry Wilson has done just that. The Sydney-based creative, who has an office in the leafy Paddington area, secured a space below the Scouts Hall a few blocks away. The low-rise brick structure, erected in 1926, featured an interior design by architect Madeleine Blanchfield, who once housed her meeting room and library here. Wilson tapped his friend and interior architect George Livissianis to tweak the interior setting, honouring the original design, but also adapting it to its new purpose as a retail space. The white walls and floors are uneven, and the original pressed tin ceiling is highlighted by a strict datum which crops and modernises the space. Several sliding partitions reveal studio HENRY WILSON lighting and wall works, allowing the space to transform as needed. A long stainless steel plinth runs the length of the interior, functioning as both display and storage for merchandise. So, what’s on the shelves at the showroom? The store presents designs created Wilson himself – mind you, he also designed Aesop‘s sleek oil burner – in addition to a tightly curated and varied range of items of his liking, such as glassware and linen from Japanese friends, some of his favourite scents, from handmade pure wood incense to oils from Perfumer H and Aesop, and To My Ships‘ personal care products. © superfuture
