The popularity of homegrown Chinese fashion has grown exponentially in recent years, allowing streetwear brand Randomevent to boost sales and expand its operations to an entirely new level. This year, Randomevent has kicked off a series of new pop-up stores across China, and the very first one has just opened its doors in Chengdu, a city with a fast-growing reputation as a buzzing fashion and lifestyle hub. The pop-up store series is called Randomevent Market, and each ephemeral space aims to reflect the character of the host city. For the inaugural Chengdu edition, the Wuxi-based brand has picked a two-storey shop unit at Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li, the city’s leading luxury shopping centre in the heart of town. The interior design, created by Randomevent;s in-house design team is inspired by the city’s well-known tea shop culture, but obviously, it’s executed with a bold modern twist.

The space has been fully stripped, featuring bare concrete walls, superimposed with either faux historic props or scaffolding-like clothing racks. On one side of the store, clothes are presented in a wall-to-ceiling installation with Chinese characters in neon. But perhaps the most striking feature is the flooring, comprising pebbles and a configuration of concrete tiles. Additional bamboo furnishings and other props reference the traditional teahouses. A metal green staircase in a bright green hue leads to the upper floor where, concealed behind a ‘melting’ door, artist and longtime collaborator Zhang Quan and his streetwear brand Melting Sadness have created a secret garden dotted with large fantastical objects. Randomevent Market stocks a curated selection of the brand’s merchandise and will be open for the next five months.
