Following last Summer’s high-profile store opening in Tokyo‘s plush shopping district of Ginza, an event we’ve covered in a previous post, Onitsuka Tiger has inaugurated a retail space on Omotesando dori, arguably the city’s most prestigious shopping artery. The store occupies four floors of a building erected in 1975 which has been fully revamped by Studio Dini Cataldi, a design practice based in Milan which has collaborated on previous Onitsuka Tiger stores. The redevelopment also resulted in a sleek new façade which aligns with the interior design. Imbued with Japanese culture, and specifically the urban dynamic of Tokyo, the aesthetic is captured by mirror-like reflections, industrial textures, colour contrasts, and last but not least, Onitsuka Tiger‘s signature bright yellow hue. Additionally, some furnishings and fixtures are a nod to traditional Shoji screens and bamboo blinds.

The basement section and first two floors showcase Onitsuka Tiger‘s collections presented at Milan Fashion Week‘s latest edition, in addition to its DENIVITA denim collection. Here, vibrant yellow expresses the active spirit of the brand, while the contrasting dark accents on the floors and walls frame the setting in a sophisticated manner. The glossy finish, achieved by hand-polishing the material in multiple layers of colour, reflects the light that shines into the store, creating an atmosphere of the Japanese capital’s vibrant energy. Mind you, the design’s large yellow glass elements have been assembled by hand, requiring advanced craftsmanship. Paired with a latticed ceiling and lighting, these specific elements embody the design objective. The third floor mainly is home to heritage-style items that combine the charm of the archives with a modern twist. © superfuture
