Knightsbridge is one of the few areas in London where power shoppers converge to burn some serious cash, and it also happens to be where Burberry founder Thomas Burberry opened the brand’s very first retail space. Also, the neighbourhood has been home to the company’s global headquarters for over 130 years. A brand new flagship store, recently opened on Sloane Street, has further anchored Burberry‘s presence in this part of town. The flagship store occupies a whopping 857 sqm. (9,225 sq.ft.) across three floors of a redeveloped listed building which features seven boutiques, 33 apartments and also a rooftop restaurant. Creative director Riccardo Tisci collaborated with Milan-based architect Vincenzo de Cotiis to create a fitting interior design, resulting in settings which blend classicism with elements of brutalism and luxurious textures. Shelves and square pillars are made from an eclectic variety of materials, including concrete, ceramic and glossy finishes.
The colours that make up the iconic Burberry Check are beige, black, white, and red, and the check pattern itself has been reinterpreted and incorporated into ceiling lighting grids and checkerboard floors. The ground floor is designed as a gallery, featuring glass cabinets and glossy shelves laden with accessories from all Burberry categories. Also to be found here is a space dedicated to trench coats. One floor up, shoppers encounter a mirror ceiling and a glass box around the stairs, adorned with intricate monochrome tiles. Here, the women’s collections are presented, featuring a glossy white floor finished with a plush beige carpet. Shoes are displayed on the stepped custom-made furniture, and arched windows offer a panoramic views of the neighbourhood. The seating area has an ottoman in the centre, allowing customers to sit back between shopping sprees. The third floor, the men’s domain, is bright and open, featuring terrazzo and sculptural furniture and fixtures.
