In Tokyo, upscale urban development often goes hand in hand with alluring new shopping grounds, and Azabudai Hills is a fine example of this pairing. It’s the latest multimillion dollar project of Mori Building, one of Japan’s leading property development and management firms, which built the city’s well-known Omotesando Hills and Roppongi Hills shopping centres and residential complexes. Similar to the latter, Azabudai Hills forms an integral part of a large urban redevelopment project which was little over 30 years in the making, and is concepted as a modern urban village, and sees offices, a hotel, hotel-branded residences, regular residences, an international school, boutiques, restaurants and cultural facilities woven together by lush green public spaces. Needless to say, the shops at Azabudai Hills are top notch, featuring names from fashion’s upper echelon, including CELINE. The Paris-based fashion house has secured a unit of 230 sqm. (2,476 sq.ft.) spread across two floors at Garden Plaza, and features an interior design by creative director Hedi Slimane.

The elusive Frenchman has audaciously recontextualised Brutalist style by blending in luxurious materials, such as various marbles and shiny brass, and pairing these with carefully sourced furnishings and cherry-picked art works from the CELINE Art Project, including paintings by Soil Thornton and works by Parvine Curie and Rochelle Goldberg. The lower ground floor presents women’s bags and small leather goods, in addition to jewellery, accessories and items from the CELINE Maison collection. In a specially designed spot, a tiered display in black and white marble directly opposite a cozy seating area, the CELINE Haute Parfumerie collection is presented. A polished brass staircase leads upstairs where the women’s ready-to-wear and shoe collections are showcased. Here, shoppers can also make use of an inviting lounge furnished with especially designed pieces by Slimane and vintage pieces which all add to the atmosphere of the retail space, and of course, an elevated shopping experience. © superfuture.com
