Since its creation in 1954, Godzilla has gained a solid global following, but nowhere on the planet has this cult character thrived as much as in its homeland—Japan. Mind you, since the release of the first Godzilla film in 1954, a total of 38 Godzilla-themed films have been produced and released, including 30 Japanese films, three animated films, and five Hollywood versions. Celebrating the alien species’ 70th anniversary, Shibuya PARCO department store’s PARCO Museum Tokyo has launched an exhibition series where the local avid fanbase indulges in all things Godzilla. Thanks to this initiative, the cult phenomenon stays alive, and probably gains new fans, through artworks by a string of contemporary artists.

Its fourth showcase, aptly entitled Godzilla The Art by PARCO vol. 4, opens on Fri – Nov 29. Curated by Tokyo-based art gallery NANZUKA, the department store’s gallery space presents a diverse variety of works by artists from Japan and abroad, including Roby Dwi Antono, Hiroki Tsukuda, Ryuichi Ohira, James Jarvis, and Tadanobu Asano. As said, all the artworks on display have Godzilla as a motif, reflecting the artists’ own thoughts and unique perspectives on Godzilla. Japanese artist Tetsuya Nakamura designed the key visual for this exhibition. Additionally, the Godzilla statue used in the actual Godzilla filming, entitled Godzilla: Final Wars, will also be on special display. © superfuture
