Sipping freshly brewed coffee doesn’t get any more theatrical than this, at least not in Jakarta. We’re talking the latest outpost op coffee parlour chain extraordinaire Tanatap which recently opened its doors in a secluded corner of Menteng, a leafy downtown area that’s home to a sizeable demographic of savvy aficionados of the black liquid. Both ingenious and visually spectacular, the café consists of various levels and boasts a lush terraced garden that’s literally framed. Visitors of the Tanatap café park their car in the parking lot in front of the structure and enter the façade-less structure on ground level. The design concept is an evocative one, and is based on the idea of a multi-level green space with dynamic platforms that rise and fall to create a roofscape, or park if you will, that comes with a new, if not, more spectacular perspective for the café’s many patrons. A stepped corridor leads to Tanatap café’s upstairs bar and lounge. Here, a square service counter sits opposite a circular bench, with built-in planter, which is paired with sleek tables.
A cut-out right above allows visitors a sneak peek of the garden overhead. Additional two-by-two seating lines the undulating walls. As said, the greens are framed, and this is done by frames of different materials, such as stainless steel, organically shaped artwork, glass reinforced concrete and glass, and each contributes visual layering to the visitors’ perspective. A stepped ramp connects the lounge with the framed garden where seating areas are interspersed with variously sized planters, offering a idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of this highly congested city. At its widest point, which is at the back, the height of the frame is no less than 9 metres. The framed garden looks out onto a lush patch of land which adds further to the sense of being in a tranquil oasis. The menu of Tanatap‘s newest outpost obviously lists a wide range of coffee concoctions and bottled coffees, but also teas and mocktails. As for food, options are several savoury main courses, light bites, and desserts. © superfuture
