When it comes to arts and crafts, you could say François Prost is a jack of all trades. Well-versed in graphic design, art direction and photography, the Paris-based creative has gone full throttle with the latter discipline in recent times. In fact, Prost’s creative output surely is extensive and striking enough for the gallery space of film production company Superette to host his first solo exhibition. Opening on Thu – Jun 7, the show is aptly entitled Photo Stories, and presents four photo series that he created between 2013 and 2017. The Faubourg series presents façades of buildings from so-called sensitive areas within the Greater Paris region. The structures were erected in the 1960s to increase the local housing stock and provide the expanding middle class modern housing.
More façades can be found in the After Party series, but this time it concerns those of French nightclubs. Shot in broad daylight, the venues have an entirely different allure. Prost’s Aux Champs-Elysées series is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world and is a iconic symbol of Parisian identity. However, when taking a closer look, this thoroughfare seems to embody a global culture rather than a local culture. The Paris Syndrome series explore the similarities between the City of Light and its Chinese counterpart Tianducheng, a suburb of Hangzhou, which is home to a realistic Paris replica complete with its own Eiffel Tower, a Haussmann district, and a park largely inspired by the grand Versailles gardens.
