Miami has always been a preferred destination for the planet’s well-heeled, but the arrival of the annual Art Basel Miami fair in 2002 put a turbo spin on the city’s stature as a luxury leisure and shopping destination. Fast forward to today, and Florida‘s biggest city boasts one of the most sophisticated and dynamic retail scenes stateside, and it’s one where global brands go the extra yard to raise their profile. And while the Miami metropolitan area has several luxury shopping ‘hubs’, it’s the city’s Design District in particular which has seen an accelerated expansion in recent years. The latest high-profile brand to arrive here is Supreme, which has secured a double-height ground floor unit of 3,450  sq.ft. (approx. 321 sqm.) on the premises of a newly built structure right next to the Institute of Contemporary Art and close to the boutiques of KITH, Jonathan Adler, Alexander Wang, KITH, Gucci and Golden Goose. Similar to other Supreme retail spaces elsewhere, the interior design is a collaborative effort of London-based design studio Brinkworth, creative studio Wilson Brothers, and last but not least, and Neil Logan, an architect based in New York City.

The Supreme store sees a subtly perforated façade, specifically designed to diffuse the intense southern light inside. The interior has been fully stripped to reveal the building’s concrete shell, removing internal concrete staircases and introducing contemporary elements that reflect the Supreme’s understated aesthetic. And speaking of distinctive, obviously, the brand’s signature floating wooden skate bowl, created with Steve Badgett of artist collective Simparch, is the store’s focal point. Set between two concrcete columns, the giant structural installation floats overhead to a height of 2.4 metres (8 ft.), allowing shoppers to walk beneath and experience it from different perspectives. Right below, serving as a dynamic backdrop is a large video wall showing branded footage. A pre-cast concrete bench inspired by the city’s renowned Martin Luther King skate spot has been designed for the retail space. Commissioned artworks include a site-specific piece by Dave X, and a mural by Rita Ackermann. The new Supreme store carries the full range of apparel, accessories, hats, bags, skateboards and related items. © superfuture
