The origin of the relationship between Nairobi-born British-Indian photographer Max Vadukul and designer Yohji Yamamoto dates back to the early 1980s, and as such, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the two leading creatives’ friendship and collaboration. In 1984, guided by then-art director Marc Ascoli, Vadukul shot the Yohji Yamamoto 1984 A/W Collection in New York City, and after that the talented lensman was picked up by the designer’s line Y’s to shoot the 1999 S/S Collection. Vadukul is the second contract photographer magazine The New Yorker hired, taking over the position which was originally held by the legendary Richard Avedon. Vadukul’s work has appeared on the covers of French and Italian Vogue editions, and has greatly contributed to the creation of Y’s unique image. The photographer has been able to capture the ‘universality’  of Y’s expressions in photographs, establishing a solid brand image along the way. An installation of Vadukul’s black and white photographs can now be seen on two levels of the Y’s boutique at Omotesando Hills shopping centre in Tokyo (closing date to be announced). © superfuture.com
