Since its inception in the 1990s, the Amadeus patisserie chain has gained a loyal following in suburban Toronto with its contemporary desserts. A little while ago, the family-owned business has made a strategic move by expanding downtown, opening up shop in the city’s upscale Yorkville district. The company has secured a 2,200 sq.ft. (204 sqm.) corner space on the ground floor of a modern, ten-storey office building erected in the early 1970s where a new café and bakery has settled. The interior design, created by architect Arancha González Bernardo and designer Michael Fohring of local design practice Odami, sees an understated yet thoughtful aesthetic which references the refined art and surgical rigour of pastry-making.

An elongated L-shaped counter, clad in pink-toned Rosa Chiara marble and with an embedded glass display cabinet, anchors the setting, while overhead, following the counter’s contours, a dropped canopy with soft curves adds subtle splendour. Mind you, soft curves are present throughout the premises—in fact, quite nearby, a dropped ceiling has been created around existing windows. Melting walls into the ceiling, aim to instil a unity and discipline to the chosen aesthetic. Seating can be found directly opposite the counter, lining the large windows, in addition to bar seating on one side. At the back of the premises, the bakery, work spacea and a restroom can be found. The menu of the new Amadeus café and bakery lists a wide range of freshly baked pastries, cakes, tarts and macarons. © superfuture
