Founded by young hospitality entrepreneurs and friends Nikita Rubin, Egor Krasnorutsky and Ramazon Fayziev, the budding Milu café chain has introduced the bubble tea phenomenon to Novosibirsk. And successfully so, given the fact that a third outpost has recently opened at a prominent location in the city’s Tsentralniy district. The trio secured a 60.5 sqm. (651 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor of Kuzbassugol, a listed 1930s residential complex built in Constructivist style, and commissioned local architecture practice zavod 11 to create a fitting interior design that resonates with its predominantly young clientele. Taking cues from the landmark building’s avant-garde aesthetics, which is marked by simple forms, the space sees an understated aesthetic.

However, the design embeds plenty of playful elements which effortlessly resonate with the clients’ sensibilities, which is further highlighted through the use of materials and a wide variety of carefully selected furniture pieces. The backdrop comprises soft green tiles, which also clad the sales counter, paired with concrete tiles. Large windows in the front and back allow in floods of natural light. Milu‘s brand identity has been developed by branding and design agency Redo Bureau, and during the interior design process, zavod 11 regularly consulted with them to ensure a consistent brand identity. The menu at Milu‘s newest café lists a wide range of bubble tea concoctions with both milk-based and fruit juice-based flavours, in addition to desserts, and even some savoury bites. © superfuture
