In the past two decades, Seoul has seen a meteoric rise as a hotbed of innovation on more than one level, including retail and hospitality. Fuelled by a robust economy, city dwellers have been served not only an increasing number of new sophisticated concepts, but also a wide variety of offerings, and unsurprisingly, many are homegrown. Interestingly, young South Korean males are as forward as their female counterpart, and specialised businesses have sprung up which take their sensibilities into account. The newly opened there_c hair salon elevates the services of a traditional barber shop with sleek, understated premises and on-trend hair cuts. Situated on the fifth floor of a modern building in the fashionable Apgujeong shopping area, the there_c hair salon measures 54 sqm. (581 sq.ft.) and features an interior design by local architecture practice YGGGR which emphasises the salon’s forward concept through its design. Upon entering the there_c salon, clients pass the service counter and enter a small corridor which leads to the compact waiting area. Four service stations, lined two by two, are divided by large mirrors mounted on sleek floor-to-ceiling steel beams which tie in with the slightly futuristic light fixtures overhea. In an adjacent space two shampooing stations can be found. The various monochrome settings are both offset and unified by flooring in an unusual pink hue, and combined with a wall-mounted chunky speaker, the two design elements adds to the salon’s forward concept. The there_c hair salon specialises in the latest men’s hair styles and grooming services.
