The Hermès flagship store itself is a sight to behold, but as of late the premises have seen a playful infusion of colour, boosting the visual appeal of the retail space even further. We’re talking the store’s newly revealed window installations by Amsterdam-based artist duo Heringa/Van Kalsbeek. The multi-disciplinary artists have always been fascinated by various spatial forms of theatre and the intrinsic relationship between front stage and back stage, using mainly painting and sculpting for their artistic expressions. Inspired by this year’s theme Astonishing Hermès, the holiday season is captured by a magical universe of shapes and silhouettes we’re all too familiar with, including ice flowers, pine forests, and also, the cutest of wrens. Divided between two installations, collectively entitled Dazzling in Stage and situated on either side of the store entrance, the intricately crafted spatial layers spawn from the synaesthetic miracles of the dioramas of 19th century paper toy theatres which frame movement while exceeding the one-dimensional perspective. As if characters in this mesmerising winter universe, selected Hermès items, such as bags, gloves, hats and cosmetics, are embedded in both installations, adding Hermès‘ renowned artisanal excellence to the visual narrative.
