There are donuts, and then there are doughnuts—the latter obviously being the artisanal kind. It’s in Bangkok where the American fast-food has taken this turn for the better, served at UFO Doughnuts‘ revamped café in the bustling city’s Sathorn area. The establishment occupies 100 sqm. (1,076 sq.ft.) set across two lower floors of a six-metre wide modern residential building, and sees both an interior design and façade design by local architecture and design practice space+craft. Upon entering the premises, customers find an uncluttered space furnished merely with an L-shaped service counter clad in stainless steel, limited seating, and matching steel-clad garbage unit. A large window behind the counter reveals all the action in the kitchen where the doughnuts are freshly baked every day. The ceiling is covered in mirrors which optically enlarge the space.

A narrow staircase, dipped in ultramarine blue and framed by LED lights, leads to the upper floor where additional seating can be found. A boxed seating area with benches is situated at the back, creating a space within a space, while the front section is furnished with one communal table, three circular metal tables, and different types of chairs. A void, strategically placed right over the counter on the ground floor, allows peeks of the alluring doughnuts. The design of UFO Doughnuts is a holistic effort as the collaboration of space+craft with Tanapoom Pornanong proves. The Bangkok-based art director created the company’s brand identity and logo, but also invented a series of family member characters which aim to make the brand more approachable. The menu at UFO Doughnuts lists a wide variety brioche-based American style doughnuts made from the finest ingredients, in addition to various coffee concoctions.
