It’s the very first time that Surabaya, Indonesia‘s second largest city, has popped up on our radar, and obviously, it’s for a good reason. The popular Locaāhands café in the city’s Wonokromo area has gained quite a fanbase with its menu of wood fire delicacies, and so much so, that as of late, a second and even more ambitious hospitality venue has opened its doors in the neighbouring Gubeng area. Locaāhands commissioned Jakarta-based architecture practice Isso to create a fitting home, and in compliance with its objective to commit to sustainable construction, the design integrates as much of the location’s original foundation as possible. Upon entering the premises of Locaāhands Dining Club, guests come across an outdoor terrace with ample seating, and once inside, a full-fledged coffee counter.

The adjacent space is a voluminous, light-filled dining area which comes with an open kitchen on one side, and both a cocktail bar and dessert bar on the other side. Up on the mezzanine floor, additional seating and office space can be found. This section has a glass roof, allowing in floods of daylight. Mind you, the ground floor also features two smaller meeting rooms, and outside in the backyard, more seating is available. All materials have been locally sourced, contributing to a modest carbon footprint. The sand-coloured bricks, coloured tiles, and wooden door-window frames are sourced from villages across Java. As said, the menu at Locaāhands Dining Club is woodfire-based, featuring dishes such as prime ribeye, duck breast and boneless chicken legs, but also lobster spaghetti, stracciatella pasta, various savoury starters, desserts, and a wide selections of pastries.
