As the Indonesian luxury market further matures and diversifies, Louis Vuitton is raising its profile by not only giving its flagship store in Jakarta a full makeover, but also expanding it at the same time. The French luxury behemoth first opened the retail space at Plaza Indonesia, arguably the Indonesian capital’s leading shopping centre, in 1991, and has since opened two other Louis Vuitton boutiques in town. Designed by the brand’s in-house design team in Paris, the various settings blend the house’s design codes, infused with its many signature insignia, with local touches, thanks to a collaboration with Indonesian interior and product designer Yuni Jie. The makeover starts right outside where the store’s façade is adorned with locally crafted ceramic bricks which are also extensively featured inside the store.

Light, airy, and last but not least lavish, in a contemporary that is. Next to ceramic, other local materials have been applied in the design, such as local stones, bamboo, rattan and raffia. Mind you, the latter two materials have been used to create some of the store ceilings. Further elevating the shopping experience at the renewed Louis Vuitton flagship store are three private salons for the most discerning of clients, each designed with a different theme inspired by alluring destinations across the vast Indonesian archipelago—sunrise in the Borobudur salon, midday at Pink Beach in the Komodo Island salon, and sunset at the Raja Ampat salon. Needless to say, similar attention has been given to the selection of furnishings and artworks for the store.

In the latter category, shoppers come across works by Indonesian artists Jemana Murti, Agnes Hansella, Farid Sycumbang, Pande Giri Ananda, and Richard Irwin Meyer, an American artist living in Yogyakarta, in addition to an artwork by renowned American artist James Turrell. Special furnishings include an Utrecht armchair by Dutch designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld, chandeliers by Henri Bursztyn, and vintage glass paintings by French artists. The renewed Louis Vuitton flagship store carries women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, accessories, shoes, bags and leather products, fragrances, travel products, watches and jewellery pieces, and cherry-picked items from the brand’s coveted Objets Nomades collection. © superfuture
