The dwellers of Klang Valley, the ever-expanding metropolican area of Kuala Lumpur, has seen an new wave of design-led hospitality venues, and the striking of them all lures sweet tooths from across town to its doorstep. We’re talking BAKERNEXTDOOR, a newly opened artisanal patisserie and café in Desa ParkCity, a leafy newly-built enclave in the heart of the city. Founded during the global pandemic, its offerings, all made with honest ingredients and specific baking techniques, resonated well with the Malaysian capital’s young and forward consumers, and not long after, it was decided to take operations to the next level and set up shop. The café occupies a 616 sq.ft. (approx. 57 sqm.) unit on the first floor of The Waterfront, the area’s shopping centre, and sees a minimalist interior design by Penang-based interior design practice Empt Studio.
The entire space is dipped, and quite literally so, in a mineral-based cement-like plaster coating which also covers the majority of the sculptural custom furnishings, comprising benches, communal tables, a sales counter, and a series of monolithic light fixtures. And speaking of light—hovering over the sales counter is an undulating pendant lamp which adds visual drama to the setting. Additional side tables and stools come in a boldly contrasting black hue, and right outside additional seating can be found. Mind you, right behind the sales counter, completely concealed, sits a full-fledged bakery where all of BAKERNEXTDOOR‘s hotly coveted offerings are freshly made. The menu at BAKERNEXTDOOR lists sourdough bread with different toppings, pastries, dessert pies and savoury pies, in addition to various coffee concoctions, matcha and also bottled drinks.
