The designs of Kiko Kostadinov may be a little hard to categorise, but that quirky approach to fashion hasn’t stopped the London-based Bulgarian designer from gaining a growing following across the planet. Following a standalone boutique in Tokyo, which opened its doors in March of this year, another boutique has just been inaugurated in Los Angeles. The Kiko Kostadinov store is situated in Melrose Hill, an an area of town which has only recently emerged as a hotbed for cool diners. Here, it occupies a redeveloped ground floor unit of an existing residential building with large windows which allow in floods of natural light. The interior design, once again created by American artist Ryan Trecartin, is an extrapolation of the retail space in the Japanese capital, and sees settings which intentionally appear make-shift.

But then again, similar to the Japanese store, the design is two-stage manifestation. The first chapter exists as a production proxy where the artist will present material explorations and spatial studies that echo the ‘in production’ phase of set building. As such, photorealistic rendering plans have been created with 3D artist and long-time collaborator Rhett LaRue, material placeholders, ‘used’ scaffolding, and other interventions create a transitional state. The final chapter of the store design will eventually emerge from this process, and will include film, objects, an installation, and sculpture. The new Kiko Kostadinov store carries men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, bags, shoes, footwear, and special projects items. © superfuture
