Hailing from Ibaraki Prefecture just north of Tokyo, lensman RK (1982) started snapping away on an iPhone in 2013 and immediately started working as the official photographer for running club Athletics Far East. Soon after switching to a digital single-lens reflex camera, he shot a number of much-publicised works such as Grandpa in Akihabara and Bike at Taipei Bridge, and a photo of the city of Fujiyoshida which was shared on Instagram’s official account. Speaking of which, his Instagram following has now reached the 435,000 mark, making him one of the most popular Japanese artists. RK’s magical and colourful take on street life, architecture and nature is increasingly becoming overseas as well. Opening Fri – Feb 28 at DIESEL Art Gallery in Tokyo is RK‘s solo exhibition NEOrient, featuring a selection of his most iconic works, in addition to a range of photographs which have never been displayed publicly before. The show allows visitors to purchase his works, in addition to exclusive catalogues, t-shirts, and postcards. Mind you, a special autograph session by the artist is scheduled on Sat – Apr 11 (4PM-6PM).
