When Jimmie Wu returned to Taipei little over a decade ago after a lengthy sojourn in New York City, he noticed a keen interest in foreign streetwear and sneakers, and jumped to the occasion with the founding of Invincible. The store has not only become a prime shopping destination for local aficionados with three branches and an affiliated store across town, but also spawned outposts as far flung as Jakarta, Shanghai, and now, also Chengdu. The opening of Invincible‘s newest store, situated in the downtown neighbourhood of Hejiangting, is indicative of the city’s ongoing boom and the buying power of an increasingly savvy demographic. Occupying two levels of a modern glass and steel structure, shoppers encounter a multifunctional gallery space and apparel and footwear sections upon entering the building. The setting sees four large wooden squares as displays, situated below rows of suspended tubular light fixtures. A metal-clad staircase leads to the upper floor where the aesthetic is similar albeit a tad more layered thanks to an exposed ceiling and a little greenhouse full of lush potted plants as a display section. All furnishings, either crafted from metal or wood, have an industrial edge and blend in well. Floor-to-ceiling windows can be found on both floors, allowing in floods of natural light. The new Invincible store carries a tightly curated mix of streetwear and fashion brands, and includes coveted names such as Thom Browne, New Balance, Wacko Maria, visvim, The Conveni and N.Hoolywood.
