In addition to its plentiful signature stores across the planet, which have signalled a strong commitment to design and an exceptional retail experience, Aesop has always a had a thing for the arts. This affiliation has led to a number of in-store installations at various stores on home turf and abroad, and it’s clearly a tradition that resonates well with the Australian cosmetics brand’s large following. The brand’s very latest endeavour is an installation on the premises of the Melbourne flagship of Myer, an upscale department store chain. Created by Bart Hess, an edgy Dutch artist based in the sleepy provincial town of Eindhoven, it’s entitled Epistēmē, and is inspired by the belief that we absorb knowledge through the senses, with the skin acting as an interface between the body and the world around us. With this notion, Hess reimagined the store’s ground floor windows as a theatre of the senses, dramatising the moment Aesop formulations touch the surface of the skin, and abstracting the transformations which occur as they nourish the physical and the sensual being. The artist has created seven short films, capturing dynamic and striking abstractions of the body in motion, and which are projected in seven of the store’s windows (on through Jul 29). An adaptation of the work will be on display in the windows of Myer‘s flagship stores in Brisbane and Sydney.
