Its cultural heritage sites, unspoiled beaches, and last but not least, an abundance of natural beauty, are a major draw for many tourists. We’re talking Mokpo, a port city in southern South Korea. As tourism has become a major source of income in recent years, an infrastructure has emerged which increasingly caters to sophisticated city dwellers from across the country. In the latter category falls the newly opened SUKSAN, a large café and bakery which not only banks on the large numbers of visitors, but does so with a strategically positioned venue which frames the sweeping sights as part of its offerings. A purpose-built, L-shaped structure, erected by architecture and interior design practice mtt, sits at the foot of Mount Yudal, overlooking the harbour. Voluminous and understated, the premises measure no less than 1,489 sqm. (16,028 sq.ft.), and sees the kitchen embedded at the very heart of the venue.

Situated in the main wing, concealed from an ample number of surrounding spaces where guests can sit back and enjoy their sumptuous order, and last but not least, take in the scenic views. Two sizeable lounges, one in each wing, face a mountainside garden, while another lounge comes with a mezzanine floor and faces the expanse of the Yellow Sea. Near the main entrance, in the main wing, visitors come across a large bar area. The site of SUKSAN, an excavated and levelled part of the mountain, has been meticulously landscaped by THE SUP, an exterior design practice based in Seoul and Busan, and adds a certain serenity to the venue. The menu at SUKSAN is elaborate and lists a wide variety of signature breads and pastries from its in-house bakery, in addition to plenty of coffee concoctions, teas and other beverages. © superfuture.com
