Little over two years after first setting up shop in Madrid, an event we’ve covered in a previous post, FENDI makes a retail statement by inaugurating a flagship store on Calle Ortega y Gasset, the very epicentre of luxury shopping in the vibrant Spanish capital. The retail space, measuring 240 sqm. (2,582 sq.ft.) spread across three levels, is situated on the ground floor of a five-storey structure built in 1900, and features a remodelled interior design by FENDI‘s in-house design team. Similar to the recently opened FENDI flagship store in Amsterdam, also an event we’ve covered in a previous post, the premises take ample cues from local culture. For the furnishings, FENDI tapped Alzueta Gallery to select pieces from emerging Spanish artists. Additionally, all artworks on display show a perspective and an aesthetic that seek to transcend the first and subtle layer of form and colours which recall the brand’s signature traits.

The ground floor sees a voluminous double height space with a setting comprised of a sophisticated mix of materials and textures which articulate a typical Spanish rhombus pattern at flooring reinterpreted with the alternation of white and pink travertine and green Saint Denis marble. Here, women’s bags, accessories and shoes are displayed on a captivating combination of ribbed travertine marble wall, evoking images of ruins and decorated with a pattern of diagonal F logo sketched by Karl Lagerfeld,  and a sequence of niches with a background in three-dimensional plaster with geometric and Pequin pattern from the FENDI archive. The setting is dotted with contemporary art and design pieces, such as artist Stan Van Steendam‘s sculptures and designer Roberto Sironi‘s round table which further elevate the shopping experience.

The basement section is home to FENDI‘s men’s collection, presented in a setting with white marble walls and shelving, checkered dark green marble flooring and shiny metal elements. A round walnut staircase connects the ground floor with the mezzanine floor, where in a setting of stainless steel clad walls, the women’s apparel and fur collections are presented. The space is adorned by three selected art pieces from the Temperature Collection by Aythamy Armas, an artist from the Canary Islands. For the most discerning clients, a V.I.P. Room is readily available. The intimate contemporary living room features a three-dimensional covering customised with an FF pattern and inspired by Spanish design codes. The space sees a black and white Patagonia marble floor and selected design furniture that complete the clients’ experience inside the boutique. Further boosting the sense of ultimate luxury is the fitting area which boasts a stunning wall decoration by artist Maru Quinoñero. © superfuture
