In the city of superlatives, the urban fabric is transforming at a pace like nowhere else on the planet. We’re talking Dubai and its meteoric rise in global rankings of almost any kind, including hospitality. The affluence of both its dwellers and increasing influx of overseas visitors have made the city a hotbed of hospitality concepts specifically catering to an in-the-know clientele, and the newly opened Onda bar and restaurant is one of them. The venue occupies a voluminous 180 sqm. (1,938 sq.ft.) unit on the premises of Canal House, a modern four-storey residential building in the city’s Al Wasl neighbourhood. Designed by architects Achraf Mzily and interior designer Natalie Mahakian of Dubai-based architecture practice Bone, the design codes of Onda tick all our boxes. Although distinctly contemporary, the bold earthy element in the colour palette combined with an abundance of potted plants add a touch of 1970s chic, while the exposed concrete wall sections blend in a Brutalist element.

Flooring clad in green Connemara marble further boosts the sense of opulence. The light-filled Onda premises see a dynamic configuration through varied elevations and a discreet presence of the bar. Living Divani leather sofas in a deep red hue dominate the interior as they’re lined along the full length of the venue, but also occupy each of the four more intimate window nooks. Additional furnishings and fixtures include sleek white metal tables, transparent round tables, and walnut-clad volumes which serve as dividers. The aforementioned plants come in illuminated planters created by Lebanese design practice Fabracas Studios, which, combined with an orange curtain provide a theatrical backdrop. Onda‘s menu lists specialty coffees and teas, matcha and smoothies, in addition to various bites created by the award-winning chef Jesse Blake which include breakfast options, sanwhiches and bowls. © superfuture
