Coffee culture is a global phenomenon, and for quite some time, a new generation of alluring, design-led coffee parlours have popped up just about everywhere, including Almaty. Nestled on the ground floor of a modern residential building in the suburban Auezov district, sits the newly opened Kosh café. At only 18 sqm. (194 sq.ft.), it’s quite compact, but what the coffee parlour may lack in spatial department, it makes up with an evocative minimalist design. Local architecture practice UP2DATE created a veritable haven for neighbourhood dwellers to escape the bland suburban surrounds over quality coffee. The aesthetic of the café setting is simple and understated, in an almost meditative way, using a palette of wood, concrete and tiles. This way, the emphasis for customers when stopping by Kosh would be on the coffee, instead of the interior design. A frivolous detail of the interior are the subtly undulating timber wall panels which come with rounded corners and joints, and are paired with concrete benches. The menu at Kosh lists a variety of coffee concoctions, matcha and other teas, lemonade, in addition to pastries, croissants and muesli.
