Following the opening of its first outpost on the U.S. West Coast little over two years ago, Maison Kitsuné is doubling up its retail presence with its popular hospitality format Café Kitsuné. Situated right next to its boutique in the buzzing Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, the newly established tandem concept also sees a full revamp of the existing retail space. The low-rise building next door dates from 1939 and was originally a family home. The interior design, created by co-founder Masaya Kuroki and the brand’s in-house design team in Paris, playfully blends Maison Kitsuné‘s signature Franco-Japanese design codes with Southern California aesthetics. By preserving the building’s original exterior, red tile façade and poured concrete flooring, the team pays homage to the neighbourhood’s history and existing ethos. Hand-painted Café Kitsuné and Maison Kitsuné signage by San Francisco-based artist Jeffrey Sincich beckons shoppers from afar with classic lettering and striking colours.

The Café Kitsuné space measures 700 sq.ft. (65 sqm.) and sees a colourful mural by Sincich as a backdrop for an elongated bench right below and paired with white oak tables and brushed stainless-steel counters. The menu lists a variety of coffee concoctions – mind you, the establishment serves coffee from Guatemala and Brazil which is locally roasted in New York City – and teas, including matcha, all paired with sweet and savoury pastries, sandwiches and small plates. Needless to say, the menu comes with plenty of French and Japanese twists. Later in the day, wines and beers are also served. As the Maison Kitsuné brand is deeply rooted in music, the café comes with a top-notch sound system by Japanese heritage audio brand Rotel. Mind you, the partnership started last year with the integration of Rotel products at Café Kitsuné’s first and only Hi-Fi cocktail bar in Brooklyn, and this is a continuation.
