Founded in 2010 by Dimitri Calligeros, streetwear emporium Above The Clouds become a preferred shopping destination of Sydney‘s discerning shoppers over the years with a tightly curated range of brands from home and abroad. The past decade, the store has moved around town a number of times, and in a brazen move in the middle of the global pandemic, Above The Clouds has once again relocated to bigger premises in Surry Hills, the neighbourhood where it all started. Occupying a 220 sqm. (2,368 sq.ft.) unit spread over two floors of the mixed-use building known as Reservoir on Crown and originally erected in 1960, the store features an interior design by Sydney-based interior design practice Pattern Studio. The aim was to create an interior design that’s an extrapolation of Above The Clouds‘ humble roots and accessibility, but also stylish and aspiring to provide a proper backdrop for its sophisticated range of offerings.
The chosen aesthetic is a quirky exploration of dualities which renders the premises both polished and raw, relaxed and refined, while also channelling a youthful vibe and modern chic that resonates well with the store’s eclectic clientele. Needless to say, the palette is one of contrasts, pairing the hyper-industrial with the playful. Scaffolding, steel strapping and pine timber is mixed and matched with pastel surfaces, yellow inside the eyewear cabinet, and a counter dipped in sky blue, but it’s the sleek, eight-metre sneaker wall on the first floor that’s the undisputed focal point of the interior design. Above The Clouds carries tightly curated men’s and women’s collections from home and abroad, in addition to fragrances, lifestyle items and books. The current brand list includes coveted names such as Levi’s Made & Crafted, Nike, C.P. Company, Noon Goons, The North Face, Gramicci and thisisneverthat.
