Founded in 1973, Fast Shop is a retail chain of electronics and home appliances which today is one of Brazil‘s largest, operating a network of stores in the country’s biggest metropolitan areas, and specifically in São Paulo, its home base. Consolidating its leading position in this specific market, the company has kicked off a retail innovation programme which anticipates the increasing digital engagement of its consumers. The Fast Shop store at Shopping Ibirapuera, a large shopping centre in the affluent Moema neighbourhood, has been redeveloped with a set of phygital principles in mind. The company tapped none other than Kengo Kuma & Associates, an acclaimed architecture practice based in Tokyo, to create a fitting shopping environment for the next decade. Occupying a 966 sqm. (10,398 sq.ft.) ground floor unit, the store features no less than 18 different sections inspired by moments that make up people’s daily life, and they’re brimming with a wide range of coveted products. The product sections have names such as Called Healthy Breakfast, Your Pet Friend, Cooking with Family, Smart Office, and Connectivity, making it instantly clear where to find any desired item.

Needless to say, the integration between the products on display and Fast Shop‘s digital content is evident as shoppers are able to access videos with usage tips and technical information via a QR code and their smartphones. Indeed, it’s a fully interactive shopping environment for modern living, and as such, shoppers are able to try out nifty new inventions, such as turning on a coffee maker by voice command, start the washing machine while working in the home office or prep the room for a home cinema. The renewed Fast Shop is all about efficiency too, and shoppers can select their trophy in the store and, via QR Code, make the payment and finalise their purchase by smart phone, simply by driving up at the counter to pick up the merchandise. In the centre of the store, three-dimensional fabric is suspended like origami as decoration. Made with warp and weft through triaxial weaving, it uses three yarn components that allow the fabric to maintain its pleated shape for a long period of time. In the store’s other sections, this type of decoration is extended, albeit in other forms and materials.
