The agnès b. Galerie Boutique in Soho opens its doors on Fri – Mar 11 with an exhibition of works by artist Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (1923-2014). The Ivorian painter’s elaborate body of work is anchored by the vision he had in 1948 when ‘the sky opened before his eyes and seven coloured suns described a circle of beauty around their Mother Sun, and he became Sheik Nadro: the one who does not forget’. From this event on Bruly Bouabré recorded his research in manuscripts which relate to all fields of knowledge, revealing an astonishing figure of thinker, poet, encyclopaedist, and creator. The showcase in New York City includes ballpoint pen and pencil drawings on cardboard, the artist’s medium of choice, and will classify under important topics of the artist’s body of work, including games, animals, fruits, tools, and also the dead, with eight works from the series A la découverte de nos morts devenus nuages: nuage oriental (2001), which roughly translates to ‘discovering our dead that have become clouds: oriental clouds’. Alongside these works, designer agnès b. will also offer the opportunity to discover Bruly Bouabré artworks from her personal art collection, including works on paper the artist created especially for her and for his important series, Mythologie Bété (2001) or Bété Mythology, in which Bruly Bouabré created a language for the Bété, a coastal people in his native Ivory Coast. The show at the agnès b. Galerie Boutique coincides with Frédéric Bruly Bouabré: World Unbound, an extensive survey of his immense work which will open two days later at the Museum of Modern Art.
