Based in the heart of Brussels, MANIERA gallery commissions architects and artists to develop furniture and objects for use, offering an opportunity to explore beyond their usual practice. Currently presented on the premises is 1B, an exhibition dedicated to furniture and objects by Belgian artist Koenraad Dedobbeleer. The show’s title references the  abbreviation of the pressure measurement unit, which reads out loud as ‘one bar’. Here, one bar, a bar is ‘displaced’ and created as a furniture gallery setting. Dedobbeleer designed fourteen objects of various scales, transforming the gallery space into an actual bar that will be used as such once a week on Friday night throughout the three month duration of the exhibition. The pieces in the show take cues from the modernist style of Austrian architect and designer Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) and by the legendary Cabaret Fledermaus, a bar in Vienna he designed for the Wiener Werkstätte, a highly influential cooperative artistic workshop. The design series, dubbed MANIERA 25, introduces a set of pieces referring to a non-domestic interior in its entirety. Every piece contributes to the creation of this interior, but each piece can be selected to respectively enter and carry the imbedded joy and functionality of its presence into a domestic interior (on through Jan 15).
