Matcha tea has seen an accelerated popularity in recent years, and given its proven health benefits, the coveted green powder has resonated extremely well with a young, in-the-know demographic. And yes, also in Prague. Situated in Žižkov, a former blue collar neighbourhood which has seen gradual gentrification in recent years, the newly opened Sensu café ticks all the boxes of the aforementioned consumer group. The café, founded by hospitality entrepreneurs and siblings Lukáš and Anna Le, occupies a 135 sqm. (1,453 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor of new multi-storey residential building, on the very location where once Žižkov Railway Station stood. The interior design by local architecture practice Ateliér Jiřího Lukáše is captured by a temperate palette of materials, such as wood, linen, raw concrete and glass.

The natural and earthy tones of the furniture pieces make the vibrant green matcha and sweets stand out. In full consideration with the Asian sense of harmony and mindfulness, the flowing linen curtains, warm oak veneer, and even specially selected crockery, all add further warmth to the spatial experience. The setting is anchored by an elongated service counter clad in light timber, paired overhead with a matching coffered ceiling, which not only solves the acoustics above the coffee machine, but also boosts the sense of being in the Land of the Rising Sun. The variety of additional furnishings and fixtures, ranging from tables and chairs, to shelving units and cabinets. All energy and resources are spent efficiently and practically. The menu at Sensu lists various matcha drinks and classic coffee concoctions, in addition to contemporary croissant options. © superfuture
