Founded in 1987, the Tokyo Type Directors Club has quickly gained global recognition for its activities in the field of typography and graphic design. Spawning from this gathering is the Tokyo TDC Awards, an annual competition among the planet’s leading art directors, designers, and typographic master to celebrate the spirit of typography and boost creativity in form and language. From over 3,000 annual entries from all over the world, each year 300 are picked for publication, and of the latter number, around one hundred—representing the best of the best—are selected for exhibition and shown at venues across the globe. One of the shows is currently held at Lei Shing Hong Centre in Beijing. Aptly entitled Tokyo TDC Selected Artworks 2018-2019, it’s presented by way of a specially designed setting by local architecture practice SpaceStation.

The design concept is inspired by the fragmented way how visitors view artworks at exhibitions and how exhibition settings influence this perception. As a result, one section displays graphic design works in an immersive environment, enhanced by specific lighting, simply to increase the sense of excitement. The other section, void of any display, cuts diagonally through the former, and is only lit indirectly by lighting coming from the display section. As such, the configuration playfully allows visitors a break from the visual overload. On display is a selection of top works from across the planet that have entered the 2018 and 2019 competitions of the Tokyo TDC Awards (on through Jul 6). Location: Lei Shing Hong Centre, 8 Guangshun Nan Dajie, Tower A, First Floor (Wangjing).
