It’s the planet’s biggest luxury market, and although growth figures slowed because of the current COVID-19 pandemic, China has also proven to be most resilient, bouncing back fast and showing much better prospects than traditional luxury markets such as Europe, North America and Japan. Unsurprisingly, in a country as obsessed with trophy goods of any kind, the desire for vintage items is limited, but there’s certainly a growing forward demographic which has picked up on the Western more-dash-than-cash approach towards fashion and a more outspoken individual style that’s void of any glossy editorial supervision. And interestingly, it’s a trend which not only has garnered fans in traditional fashion hubs such as Shanghai and Beijing, but also in the country’s second-tier megacities such as Chongqing. It’s here where entrepreneur Zhi Li and his wife set up FMVintage Luxury, a boutique filled to the brim with a curated selection of vintage items by leading luxury brands. The interior design, created by local design practice Jade Simple Design, pairs classic design references with modern elements. Occupying 128 sqm. (1,378 sq.ft.) set across a single floor, the boutique sees different homey sections where shoppers can browse at ease, or else, sit back in comfort to ponder over a trophy purchase. A palette of washed stone, fine dark wood carpentry, and stuccoed walls forms the backdrop of a few well-selected furniture pieces by European designers such as Jean Royère, Franco Albini and Philippe Starck, in addition to a series of artworks, including a painting by Chinese contemporary artist Pang Maokun. The FMVintage Luxury store exclusively carries women’s vintage bags and small leather goods by luxury brands, such as Chanel, Hermès, Versace, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Dior.
