He’s a long way from homebase New York City, but then again, Romon Kimin Yang a.k.a. ROSTARR (1971) has found a perfect home away from home in The Slow. In fact, the boutique hotel on Bali‘s west coast has become a blank canvas for the acclaimed artist’s creative output, seeing an immersive transformation of part of the premises. Born in South Korea, the artist and his family immigrated to Washington D.C. when he was just one year old, and in 1989 he moved to New York City to attend the School of Visual Arts where he majored in graphic design and printmaking. From early in his career he managed to produce work in both the art and design spheres, blurring the lines between the two disciplines. For over 20 years he has built an extensive oeuvre of abstract polymorphic paintings, totemic iconographic characters and mostly black and white calligraphic works. The showcase at The Slow, anchored by the hotel’s very own gallery space Room 13, sees the walls and ceiling covered in an intricate mosaic of ROSTARR‘s signature motifs and an abundance of framed works on paper. Next to the gallery space, his paintings and signature sculptures adorn the hotel lounge, restaurant, hallway and even the restroom (on through Dec 19). The adjacent hotel shop stocks a number of branded items, including T-shirts and books.
