The MCM brand is on a roll. Embedded in its drive to raise its global profile is the opening design-led retail spaces at leading shopping destinations across the planet, including a much-publicised second outpost in Tokyo. The Japanese capital easily tops all other cities where MCM has set up shop so far in terms of the volume and diversity of upscale retail offerings, and banking on this stature, the newest flagship store in the city’s Ginza shopping district has been given a little extra in the form of a gallery space. Called König Tokyo, it’s a renewed collaboration with gallerist Johan König of Berlin-based contemporary arts venue König Galerie. Emphasising the brand’s German roots, the gallery launches a rotating exhibition programme which aims to introduce artists in Germany, Switzerland and Austria to a Japanese audience. The inaugural show of König Tokyo, entitled Heimweh, opens Sat – Nov 9 and exclusively presents works by top fashion photographer Jürgen Teller. The exhibition explores the lensman’s own stories and questions, and all obsolete expressions and traditions that define the Bundesrepublik. Interestingly, many of the works will be exhibited for the very first time.
