As for many other discerning travellers, Grupo Habita has made many of us take a different look on hospitality, Mexico, and last but not least, Mexican hospitality. Needless to say, the hospitality group’s homeland is fertile ground and its main source of inspiration, and it’s where the majority of its exquisitely designed and beautifully located properties can be found. The latest addition to its portfolio is Escondido Oaxaca, another alluring place to stay in Oaxaca, the capital city of the eponymous coastal state in the south of the country. The Grupo Habita fanbase is familiar with the region as Hotel Escondido, a cool hideaway smack on the Pacific coast, has been hosting guests for quite a few years now. So, Escondido Oaxaca offers an entirely different setting in the historic heart of the city, occupying one of the many traditional low-rise structures which can be found here. Architect Alberto Kalach of Mexico City-based Taller Arquitectura X was tapped to redevelop the building, and Década owners Lucía Corredor and Cecilia Tena designed the interior in collab with Grupo Habita co-founder Carlos Couturier.

As always, the settings are respectful of the original architecture and much of the details have been retained. Featuring just twelve rooms and suites, four situated in the historic building and the remainder in a contemporary building at the back of the hotel, the design is understated yet warm and welcoming, and sees stuccoed walls, timber furnishings and fixtures, and plenty of local touches which add even more character to the property. It’s all about modern comfort and amenities, and the rooftop pool is additional proof of that. Being the ultimate stay in town, Escondido Oaxaca also offers room for in-house downtime and jolly banter with its so-called Culture Room, a space for reading and co-working, a pergola-covered rooftop bar  next to the aforementioned pool, and last but not least, its ground floor restaurant where chef Mario Petterino serves sumptuous Italian food with classic recipes from the northern Piedmont region which have been passed down from generation to generation.
