Based in New York City, artist Curtis Kulig primarily focuses on painting, photography and drawing. The creative multi-tasker currently has a solo exhibition, simply entitled Prize, at the agnès b. Galerie Boutique in Soho. It’s Kulig’s first ever show on the premises, and he presents more than 30 drawings, ceramics and a large-scale painting, in addition to an 8mm film in which he has invited Los Angeles-based musician and composer Asuka Matsumiya to create a soundscape. All of the work captures the nuanced movement of professional boxing. Very similar to professional dancers, boxers exist in the physical moment – the body is their medium and every gesture is an articulation of strategy. The end result is exhaustion, and Kulig’s poignant illustrations give the viewer a chance to linger quietly in suspended time. Through ink, pencil, paint and film, the artist honours and plays around with the seriousness of boxing (on through Nov 25).
