Elevating the office work experience to a higher level, with a distinct intergalactic feel even, is the newly opened J SPACE co-working space in Beijing. Situated in Shangdi, a district on the northern outer fringes of town which has been designated as a hi-tech hub, J SPACE is a collaborative effort of Jinmao Capital, a real estate and finance company, and partner Zhubajie, an online platform which connects freelancers in design, IT, marketing, and other disciplines with clients. The venue rubs shoulders with offices of an increasing number of China‘s leading tech corporations, including as Baidu, Xiaomi, and Tencent. Measuring 4,427 sqm. (47,652 sq.ft.) spread over four floors of a newly built structure, it features an interior design by local practice DAGA Architects which, quite audaciously, references the futuristic design codes applied in Stanley Kubrick‘s cinematographic masterpiece 2001: A Space Oddyssey. Upon entering, customers pass through a steel-clad corridor and find a light-filled atrium with a mini zen garden at the very end. On one side a lush vertical garden, concealing the elevator shaft, reaches all the way up to the glass ceiling, while a sculptural staircase in a gold hue is situated directly opposite. The J SPACE reception desk can be found on the top floor, and the 761 workplaces, available in various configurations, and conference and meeting rooms can be found on each level. The fourth floor also comes with a number of extras, such as a bar for socialising, a Starbucks coffee machine, a small gym, an infant room and locker rooms.
