Beer parlours aren’t exactly top of the list when thinking of design-led spaces, but the recent renewal of Galaxy bar will likely change your view. Situated on a bustling thoroughfare in Sokol, a northwestern suburb of Moscow, the venue reflects an adventurous approach to this popular hospitality segment. The interior design, created by architect Maxim Kashin of local practice Monoloko, interestingly is a nod to the ideology of Kazimir Malevich. The 75 sqm. (807 sq.ft.) ground floor space boasts a monochrome colour scheme that has been applied according to the Suprematism principles defined by the Russian avant-garde artist, and thus aiming to alter patrons’ visual perceptions of the three-dimensional geometric furnishings. A bar clad in shiny marble lends the setting a opulent touch, but it’s the meandering spatial light installation, made of flexible neon light enveloped in a polyurethane shell, that steals the show. The Galaxy bar is a true beer haven as it’s equipped with 24 faucets from which an equal number of craft beers are served, supplemented by no less than 100 bottled beers.
