Few people know of Japan‘s sunny sub-tropical side, let alone the Ryukyu Islands, which stretch from Kyushu all the way down down south to Taiwan. One of its most southern islands, Miyakojima, or Miyako Island in English, is blessed with pristine beaches and lush vegetation, and as such, widely regarded as one of the country’s most coveted paradise-style getaways. It isn’t surprising Rosewood Hotels & Resorts has recently inaugurated an ultra-luxuriousr property on the alluring island. The seaside resort, aptly called Rosewood Miyakojima, is situated in an idyllic spot amidst sugarcane fields in the north of the island, overlooking Oura Bay and with direct access to a pristine beach. The property features just 55 villas, including three rather grand houses.

The property is designed according to Rosewood’s unique A Sense of Place philosophy, meaning that the architecture of the resort draws from the history, landscape and culture of the archipelago, blending indigenous Okinawan materials such as Ryukyu limestone with the Japanese spirit of wabi-sabi. Additionally, the resort is built in sustainable harmony with the natural environment, making use of the original terrain and partnering with the local community. Needless to say, an equal attention to detail has gone into the interior design, created by acclaimed Amsterdam-based Piet Boon. The villas are designed in a residential style, offering unrivalled comfort, cutting-edge amenities, and either sweeping ocean or beachfront views. For those who love to live large, the 150 sqm. (1,614 sq.ft.) Kuura and Upra houses are readily available.

The houses feature two elegantly appointed bedrooms, a service kitchen and dining room, all oozing a refined luxury that’s unrivalled on the island. As a luxury resort, facilities need to be exceptional. Well, Rosewood Miyakojima doesn’t disappoint. Guests can indulge in no less than four restaurants and bars spanning local and international cuisine, an infinity pool by the beach and an Asaya Spa, Rosewood’s pioneering wellbeing concept. The spa features six private treatment rooms, a sauna and steam room, a hydrotherapy facility and an atelier featuring luxury skincare, and a fitness room. A private pavilion overlooking the ocean houses weddings and special occasions, while families will find enriching experiences at the Rosewood Explorers Club, designed to create unforgettable memories for kids. © superfuture
