Following a string of outposts in Europe’s most popular capitals, it was only a matter of time before The Hoxton would arrive in Berlin. Well, it has now. Nestled in Charlottenburg, a leafy neighbourhood dotted with museums, vibrant night haunts and luxury boutiques, The Hoxton Charlottenburg occupies a modern, eight-storey building which previously was home to another hotel. The property features 234 comfy guestrooms in six different categories and a matching set of facilities. The interior design, created by AIME Studios, the in-house design studio of Ennismore, the hotel chain’s owner, is inspired by the theatricality of the neighbourhood’s golden era and the raw materiality of Brutalism. The design codes are layered and textural—unrefined plaster walls provide the backdrop to ornate Art Deco light fixtures and vintage furnishings, and striking, industrial materials are used in juxtaposition with exaggerated cornicing and emerald-green tiles.

A curated collection of locally sourced and commissioned artwork includes a bespoke abstract mural by Berlin-based artist Stefanie Kägi, which dominates one wall of the lobby and nods to the dancelike figuration of German Expressionism. The guest rooms take ample cues from Art Deco and the classical structures which shape the neighbourhood’s architectural landscape. A muted colour palette of desaturated pinks and greens creates a sophisticated backdrop for vintage-inspired furniture pieces and scalloped headboards, with the shell motif recurring in striking rug patterns and elegant glass wall lights. Wall panelling and wooden herringbone flooring provide a structural counterpoint to the soft fluidity of the rooms, and this juxtaposition also extends to the bathroom design where exposed metal shelving is set against graduated mauve tiling.

The Hoxton Charlottenburg‘s hotel lobby exudes its function, serving also as a meeting space, extended living room, and a place where to indulge, and its facilities are a seamless extension. The Teahouse is a charming corner café which transforms into an intimate cocktail bar in the evening. Feeling peckish? The adjacent House of Tandoor, a modern North Indian-inspired restaurant serves bold flavours, fragrant spices, flame-filled tandoor cooking and specialises in the generous service of Indian dining. Tucked up under the eaves of the hotel, three meeting and event spaces set around a central pantry kitchen make up The Apartment, featuring Mary Wigman-inspired interiors defined by fluid lines, soft, muted hues, vintage lighting, and a touch of shiny chintz, and very soon home to some of the sprawling German capital’s hottest parties.
