Just a 40-minute car drive south from Philadelphia and right in the middle between Washington D.C. and New York City, the scenic town of Wilmington is the perfect weekend getaway for urban dwellers. Initially founded in 1638 as Fort Christina, Sweden‘s first settlement in the North America, it’s a place that obviously has its fair share of historic colonial landmarks. Oozing a similar storied past is The Quoin, a new luxury boutique hotel from Method Co., a Philadelphia-based hospitality company with a growing number of unique properties, and in partnership with real estate developer The Buccini/Pollin Group. The hotel occupies the former Security Trust & Safe Deposit Company Building, a historic Victorian Romanesque brownstone built in 1885 by architect Frank Heyling Furness. Situated downtown, The Quoin features just 24 rooms, and is designed by Method Co.’s in-house design firm, in collaboration with architecture and interior design firm Stokes Architecture + Design.

The premises are welcoming, cozy, and last but not least, full of period charm, featuring guest rooms with beautiful arched windows and moldings inspired by Victorian-era motifs and Shaker-period decor, and unsurprisingly, the eye for detail extends to the public spaces. The hotel has a bounty of food & beverage outlets, including The Quoin Restaurant & Café, the hotel’s lobby restaurant, handsomely designed with an open kitchen framed by a spacious dining room area outfitted with elegant wood paneling, custom mohair banquettes, and leather detailing. The Rooftop Lounge, Wilmington‘s only rooftop venue, is a lounge and workspace by day, but all for play by night, serving light fireside fare and expertly crafted cocktails. Coming very soon is Simmer Down, a sumptuous craft cocktail lounge featuring the former bank vault’s original brick ceiling and a custom, room-spanning painted mural by artist Reverend Michael Alan.
